CHARLTON COURSE IS FIT FOR A PRINCE
Sixteen unemployed youngsters kick started their sporting careers with Charlton and the Prince's Trust last month.
The club's Sparrows Lane training ground was the location for a Get Started with Football course that enabled the group to see the first team being put through their paces by manager Phil Parkinson.
This was followed by the opportunity for the group to quiz him on his role as a coach, and also the opportunity to meet two young first team players Jon Jo Shelvey and Scott Wagstaff.
The programme in March was delivered in partnership with the Charlton Community Trust and the Youth Impact Project, and offered young people the opportunity to work towards a Football Association Level One coaching qualification.
They also gained certificates in first aid and child protection, and took part in workshops focusing on healthy eating.
All sixteen people participating on the course were presented with certificates of achievement by Charlton welfare officer and ex-player Dave Regis, and invited to watch the home match against Watford
Sean Daly, Community Scheme Solutions football co-ordinator, said "Football can engage people in different ways and open up a lot of opportunities both within the sport and elsewhere. The Trust were really pleased to deliver this course for the Prince's Trust and work with a great group of young people. We look forward to seeing how they all progress and will be supporting them where we can."
The Prince's Trust also provides support after the programme to help the young people into employment, education or training.
