Goalless Gulls game earns point - Report by Colin Harrison
Neither side could break the deadlock when the Seagulls came to visit Erith Stadium, Sunday March 7th.
Speaking after the game, Technical Director, Paul Mortimer put the lack of goals from his side down to a lack of commitment in the final third: "It is more than taking the opportunity, the players have a responsibility to shoot."
He said: "We played really well without the ball, won it back and passed well at times"
"It was a disappointing one really, as I think we played against opponents who were beatable but we didn't seem to recognise it" he added: "We should have had the game wrapped up early."
Charlton Keeper, Megan Lynch kept her part of the deal, when she made a series of excellent saves in the second half. Brighton's Vicky Vickery could have stole the show in the last five minutes when she was in on goal twice.
Firstly, with a well struck shot in the box but Lynch was her match - well positioned and a safe pair of hands.
A minute later the striker raced through again, the Addicks' hearts were in their mouths, as Lynch bravely challenged one on one, tipping the bouncing ball out for a corner. The Addicks' keeper, made two saves in short succession earlier in the second the half at 18 and 20 minutes.
The game was played in bright winter sunshine with a real bite in the breeze.
The opening period was well contested. The first chance fell to Brighton's, Lily Agg in the box on eight minutes - the 16 year old, scuffed her chance and Lynch gathered safely. Charlton hit back, when Charley Clifford shot over from range in the 16th minute.
The possession eventually fell with Charlton who controlled much of the 1st half but created slim chances on goal. Carrie-Anne Layton made some neat play down the right towards the end of the half and Emma Tune shot on target.
In the second half, for all their possession and control, Charlton lacked any directness in attack and when the ideas ran dry, Brighton earned limited, but clear cut chances on the break.
Emma Tune's energy in midfield and Kristina Manteklow's willingness to run at goal was commendable and eventually the Addick's won some free-kicks in the final third but little was made of them.
The best chance of the game for Charlton, fell to Ciara Sherwood in injury time when she received the ball, just yards from goal at the back post but alike to Agg's in the opening minutes the shot lacked connection and was gathered by Seagulls' keeper, Lucy Mangan.
Brighton's Carly Esposito picked up a red card for dissent with moments to go.
Charlton have faced the challenge of not having regular matches - It was only their second game of the campaign in 2010, the first in the league. Happy to have finally played, Mortimer said: " We've tried to keep training as competitive as possible".
The Addick's face Millwall Lionesses on Thursday 11th March, he added: "I for one am looking forwards to it."
"It's going to be a tough game. If we can match them - our footballs good enough."
