The Women’s teams ten match unbeaten run came to an end in controversial circumstances at Keynsham on Sunday as the home side fielded a player not named on the team sheet whose contribution influenced the scoreline.
Report by Sue Prior
With Yasmin Poole, Toni Alden and Emma Tune unavailable Technical Director Paul Mortimer brought Grace Coombs and Stef Simmons in at full-back and Katie Hardaker started in midfield.
The Addicks made a disastrous start conceding in the first minute. Keeper Megen Lynch made a good save and Becky Duggan then blocked a shot but their team mates failed to shut down a Keynsham striker who clipped the ball over Lynch to open the scoring.
The Addicks hit straight back with striker Gemma Bryan’s powerful shot grazing the crossbar.
A ball through the Charlton defence then picked out striker Leanne Lapham who set a shot dipping over the bar.
On 27 minutes Bryan won a corner and from Stef Simmons flag kick Keynsham keeper Irena Miljkovic pushed the ball into her own net for the equaliser.
Encouraged by this Charlton began to take control of the game. A measured pass from Charley Clifford sent Kristina Manktelow clear and Bryan met her cross first time sending the ball narrowly over the target.
After 35 minutes Keynsham made a tactical substitution sending on Brazilian playmaker Ana Bruni. This move was quickly rewarded as two minutes later the ball was fed through to Lapham who was given the time and space to finish from the edge of the area to regain Keynsham’s lead. It was at this point the Charlton management realised Bruni was not on the Keynsham team sheet.
A teasing cross was then well claimed by keeper Lynch as the home side began to take control.
With 43 minutes gone keeper Megen Lynch’s clearance from defender Vanisha Patel’s back pass cannoned off Lapham to latched on to the rebound to increase Keynsham’s lead.
The final action of the half saw a dangerous two footed challenge by Andreea Alexandru on Kristina Manktelow go unpunished.
After Charlton’s protests Keynsham replaced Bruni for the second half but by that time the damage was done.
The Addicks started the second half strongly with Coombs making a great run into the area and setting up Bryan whose effort was saved by the keeper.
Charlton controlled the second half with Kristina Manktelow and Charley Clifford both having fine efforts parried by the keeper but none of their team mates could cash in on the rebound.
Ciara Sherwood then sent Bryan clear and the striker saw her first shot pushed away by the keeper and her effort from the rebound was deflected wide.
Bryan was a constant headache to the home defence and should have been awarded a penalty when kicked in the back of the legs.
The referee eventually got his book out minutes later cautioning Katarzyna Rusek for a late challenge on Simmons.
Bryan then picked up a booking for descent after voicing her frustration of being held by a defender and only being rewarded a corner.
A Keynsham counter attack then saw Becky Duggan head clear a corner and the final action of the game saw Ashley Reinecke pick up a yellow card for a foul on Duggan.
