Lynch lands player of the year award

Megan Lynch with Paul Mortimer (l) and Paul Elliott (r)
Goalkeeper Megen Lynch was named the Charlton women's team's player of the year on Friday night, and there were also awards for Toni Alden and Gemma Bryan.
Charlton technical director Paul Mortimer reserved special praise for Lynch, who claimed the manager's award, as well as left-back Alden (players' player of the year) and striker Bryan (most improved player).
Lynch had big boots to fill, replacing last season's players' player of the year Becky Musial, and got off to a shaky start, prompting Mortimer to bring in a more experienced replacement.
However, Lynch stepped up her game and was 'untouchable' throughout the year, conceding just 20 goals from 22 games and keeping 10 clean sheets.
On collecting her award, Lynch said: "I was really surprised because I thought someone else would have got it, maybe our captain or someone who has stepped up from the reserves like Emily Gerke."
She then paid tribute to her defensive teammates, adding: "I'm very proud but it's not just my own efforts, it is everyone else's because there have been a couple of shots that have been cleared off the line or that have been deflected onto the post."
Mortimer noted: "She has been absolutely brilliant; I am genuinely pleased for her. She has performed really well and she has saved us virtually in every game, even when we are on top there have been spells she has saved us and and I have been really pleased with her performances.
"You just can't put a price on having such a good goalkeeper. We have only been beaten by the odd goal and she has only conceded 20 this season so I am pleased with her and she has got room for improvement as well."
Alden, who has a superb delivery from set-pieces, has been fantastic this season at left-back and was recognised by her peers with the players' award, with Mortimer stating: "Toni is a very good player but I think she needs to be a little bit more serious about her football because she could go on and play at a higher level without doubt. I don't think she pushes herself enough. What we are seeing from her at the moment is good but she is 10 times better."
Bryan capped off an outstanding end of season, scoring five goals from the final six games to grab the most improved player gong.
Said Mortimer: "She has been absolutely brilliant. The first half of the season she wasn't great and I think she would admit that too but second half of the season she has been fantastic. She has been hugely unplayable at times and I have been really pleased with how she has played."
Mortimer added: "The girls deserve to have a celebration of their achievements and the hard work they have put in this year but also the parents need to hear sometimes just how valued they and their kids are.
"We had Paul Elliott, a Trustee of Charlton Athletic Community Trust, here today, which was absolutely brilliant, the girls loved that and I have really enjoyed that," he added.
