Sugar Smart

On the 17th of January The Royal Borough of Greenwich launched the Sugar Smart cities initiative at The Valley, with many organisations and schools in attendance pledging to become sugar smart and showing their support.

Chartlton Athletic Community Trust is working in conjunction with Charlton Athletic Football Club and it’s caterers DNC to put on a united front in combatting the overconsumption of too much sugar throughout the borough.

Started by TV Chef Jamie Oliver, Sugar Smart is a grassroots campaign aiming to tackle the overconsumption of sugar and to increase awareness of the dangers of eating too much sugar.

Children and Adults in the UK are generally consuming 2 to 3 times the amount of sugar that they should be and in Greenwich, which is knows to lead to high levels of Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes and Tooth Decay.  it is thought that around 133,000 Adults are carrying excess weight that is known to increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and the risk of heart attack and by the age of 11, 40% of the children in Greenwich are overweight or obese.
